I really like a great construct that fights stereotypical norms – and Žiga Petek’s work on this R65 is a key instance of simply that.
In line with protection from BikeEXIF, hopping from a light-weight touring machine to café racer extra-ordinaire took a totally new strategy to design and quite a lot of sleepless nights; the dedication to design was going to be powerful to promote with out whole loyalty, so Petek dove proper in, taking over Boštjan Vidrajz’s 1983 BMW R65 with a single query to the person:
“I requested him ‘do you belief me?’ He stated ‘sure,’ and that was it.”
From there, the center of the operation have been in full movement. Stripping the R65 again to her base bones, Petek went sharp and modern, shrinking and stretching new bodywork out of aluminium and bringing over an outdated Honda tank (shaved down) for the bike’s gas storage.
“I created these form of aero wings that cowl the perimeters of the engine and go over the cylinder heads, so as to add some efficiency model,” provides Žiga.
“Over these wings I added two small cast carbon winglets on all sides.”

The bike carries a boatload of cleverly-hidden options; from the customized oil sump within the stomach pan, to the Motogadget keyless ignition tucked into the bike’s carbon winglets and LED flip lights built-in into the bike’s entrance wing, Petek’s design speaks nicely of the care taken in creating the café racer.
“To create every little bit of carbon trim, Žiga first had the fairing and tail 3D-scanned to create a digital canvas to work on,” continues BikeEXIF.
“ER Bikes’ Blaz Sustarsic then lent a hand, by translating Žiga’s concepts into digital renders. An organization named VG Forma 3D printed every prototype half, then these prototypes went to Angström Efficiency, who replicated them in cast carbon fiber.”
Subsequent, the engine.

This explicit R65 bought a full rebuild, full with “new valves, valve springs and bearings, and a Motogadget-equipped rewire with a brand new charging system and a Silent-Hektik ignition,” bumping the factor to 8500cc’s of energy.
Jaka Legiša was purportedly behind the handiwork of the pipes, whereas Gasoline&Retro fitted the R65 out in the identical forks as Kawasaki’s ZX-10R.
Add a BMW GS’s swingarm and a one-off YSS rear shock, and suspension is accomplished, rolling on the addition of spoked Pirelli Phantom Sportscomps, clamped by Brembo, with discs courtesy of Motomaster.

Right here’s an inventory of the extra work executed:
- TRW clip-ons
- Mikuni carbs with velocity stacks
- cast carbon trim valve covers
- Tomaselli throttle
- Brembo grasp brake cylinder, clutch and brake controls
- Motogadget grips, mirrors, digital sprint and push buttons
- Koso LEDs
- Customized shift lever
- color-coded hoses and wires
- BMW’s 2023 ‘Brooklyn Gray’ paint colour

After all, we wouldn’t be right here if it weren’t for the response sequence:
“When Boštjan from Flex Instruments Slovenia noticed it for first time, he couldn’t communicate for an hour,” laughs the builder.
“That is in all probability my finest construct in my 13 years of customized bike constructing,” Žiga provides. “It’s been many lengthy night time shifts, however I’d do all of it once more.”
